Celebrates 50 Years of Community

Hilton Head Island, SC. . . . The Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island celebrated its 50 th anniversary last evening with a gala at the Sonesta Resort. Chartered in 1967, the Club is part of Rotary International, an

organization of business and professional people united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standard, and build peace and goodwill in the world. The Hilton Head club has played a major role in the development of the Town. Among its most recognized local achievements are:

  • Initiating the Island Rec Center;
  •  Building a permanent home for Deep Well;
  •  Expanding the Memory Matters facility;
  •  Providing more than $400,00 0 in college scholarships to local students;
  •  Recognizing annually student scholars, teachers, and public service officers;
  •  Implementing Safety Town for island children;
  •  Establishing the Hilton Head Island Hall of Fame at Honey Horn;
  •  Providing informational kiosks along the island’s bicycle paths;
  •  40 years of ringing the bell for the Salvation Army;
  •  25 years of volunteering for the Heritage Golf Tournament: and
  •  Broadening community service by giving birth to four other Rotaryclubs in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

As an active member of Rotary International, the Club has:

  • Provided more than $165,000 to support eradication of polio worldwide;
  •  Established the Gift of Life program to provide on Hilton Head life- changing reconstructive surgery to youth from underdeveloped counties;
  •  Sponsored student and professional exchange programs worldwide; and
  •  Sponsored safe water, disaster relief, medical, dental and mental
  • heath programs on four continents.

In recognition of its service, the Rotary Club of Hilton Head was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Community Organization of the Year Award in on three occasions. At last evening’s gala event, the Club

was presented proclamations of commendation from Mayor David Bennett and Congressman Mark Sanford.

 

As a 50 th anniversary gift to the community, the Rotary Club of Hilton Head island has developed a series of 50 attractive commemorative panels to be installed along the Island’s many miles of leisure paths. These panels will provide residents and visitors brief “factoids” on Hilton Head’s cultural heritage and natural history, as well as identify local points of interest

 

The Club’s 155 members are committed to continuing service here and abroad.
