Aby Freeman shared some photos, as well as travel experiences and cultural differences as a Rotary Exchange student during the 2016-2017 school year in Lyon, France with her sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Bluffton. With her three different families and the sponsored end-of-year trip, Aby visited Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria and of course other areas of France, including Paris. Abby noted that families had full, prepared meals every day, rarely eating out and never at fast food restaurants. School classes were formatted similar to colleges in the US, where starting and ending times vary depending on class schedules. Sports teams are not part of schools, so the hectic practice and game schedules many parents face in the US were not a factor. School schedules differ too .. students in France attend school for two weeks and then get two weeks off. Aby is home now, missing her best friend from Lyon, and adjusting to a “counter culture” shock of being back in the States again, now as a well-traveled, bilingual Junior at Bluffton High School.
