It was “Ladies Day” at Spring Valley Rotary last week, when we inducted three new members, Brenda Milton, sponsored by Martie McParland and Patsy Brewer, Gwen Rawls, sponsored by Paula Matthews and Gina Pollack, sponsored by Stevie Johnson. Our club continues to have the highest percentage of women Rotarians in our District, just one of the many ways we are a diverse Rotary Club. Thanks to these members for sponsoring new members.

Brenda Milton is a retired Media Specialist in Richland District One with 31 years of service in the Army Reserves. She currently  volunteers with Richland School Districts 1 and 2, serving as a mentor to students and assisting teachers in the class room. Gina Pollack is First Citizens Bank Branch Manager and is new to Columbia as of September of 2015, relocating from Massachusetts. Gwen Rawls is the owner of Gwen Rawls Italian Shoe Boutique in Trenholm Plaza.
Welcome to our newest Spring Valley Rotarians.

The Rotary Has Heart Project for the St. George Rotary Club is our ongoing backpack buddies program. We pick up food from the Lowcountry Food Bank once a month and deliver that to the individual Interact Clubs (we support 2 Interact clubs). Dorchester Academy has 35 students in its interact club. They usually have 10-12 students that help unload the food and then the juniors (12 students) pack the bags. They pack about 500 bags and deliver them to Williams Memorial Elementary School each month. The administrator there hands out about 125 bags every Friday to the underprivileged students each week so that they will have something substantial to eat over the weekend.

Woodland High School has 50 students in its interact club. They do the same thing as DA but they deliver to Harleyville Elementary School.  They have about 25 regulars that help (rotating from month to month). They pack and deliver 375 bags each month and their administrator hands out about 95 bags each Friday afternoon.
So, in cooperation with the Lowcountry Food Bank, we provide 875 backpacks each month so that underprivileged kids in our area are guaranteed to have something to eat on the weekends!

The Walterboro Rotary Club donated Christmas toys to 28 children at Forest Hills Elementary. Wednesday, December 14, 2016, Walterboro Rotary in partnership with the schools Angel Tree program helped make sure dozens of needy children’s Christmas were a bit brighter.

This year’s Angel Tree had over 70 names, and thanks to the hard work of the people at Forest Hill and Cindy Riley these kids will get a merry Christmas. We couldn’t help our community without the support of our great community. Thanks to Walterboro Rotary successful Ireland Creek Bridge Run and a matching grant from Rotary International it was possible to spread the Christmas cheer.

The Rotary Club of Little River’s annual golf cart give away just concluded at the Dickens Christmas Show in Myrtle Beach.  The winners were Mark Jones and his daughter Courtney of Sanford, NC.  They are shown here as they picked up the cart.  They seem quite excited.  Wonder if Courtney will let Dad drive it occasionally.

On Veterans Day, November 11, 2016. Lovenia Williams (Standing in center rear of photo), Vice President of Coastal Carolina University Rotaract Club, is pictured with local area Veterans during a special moment at Eggs Up Grill, Conway. Lovenia, a CCU student, presented each Veteran a home made wallet card with a star from a retired American Flag reminding them in this moving tribute:

“I am part of our American Flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that….you are not forgotten.” The Rotaract Club is sponsored by Rotary Club of Carolina Forest Sunrise.
