Twice a year, Chicora Rotary Club chooses a recipient for yard work and minor repairs to fulfill their pledge to give back to the community through service projects. This year, club members competed the clean up of two properties in one day.

Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self” and club members put that into practice as they cut grass,  pruned bushes, raked leaves and removed debris. A dozen club members split up on a recent Saturday morning and cleaned the yards of Mr. Johnny Simpson and Ms. Florie Cuttino.

Mr. Simpson is a retired, decorated City of Myrtle Beach firefighter who is suffering from diabetes. Ms. Cuttino, 90 years old, is a lifelong resident of Myrtle Beach. When asked about her longevity, she said that she has always taken care of herself, never smoked and never drank.  She went to bed early and rose early so that she could put in a good days work, and didn’t retire until she was 84 years old.
