Daniel Island, SC – November 22, 2016 – Rotarians assembled early Tuesday morning at the Publix on Daniel Island to load 171 grocery bags, each complete with all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Publix provided the food at net cost and donated an additional 40 whole turkeys to the effort. Rotarians delivered the meals to the Cainhoy Community Center. Local leaders and church elders in the Cainhoy community ensured the meals reach the identified recipients, even if they are unable to pick them up at the community center. “This is the 14th year in a row for the Rotary Thanksgiving Food Drive, one of 3 annual food drives the club undertakes”, explained Rotarian Cecil Mills, long time leader of the project. “This long standing initiative targeting hunger in our club’s immediate service area is one of our most important projects.” said club president Gray Ives. “We are thankful for the support for our food drives from Publix, District 7770 Matching Grant funds and the Daniel Island Community Fund”, added Ives. Thanks to all that made this another successful food drive! In addition to 3 annual food drives, Daniel Island Rotary Club regularly assists with distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Cainhoy community in cooperation with the Lowcountry Food Bank and other local organizations.
