Each year the Rotary club of Beaufort presents the Col. Jesse L. Altman Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement to a law enforcement officer with the City of Beaufort, the City of Port Royal, the Beaufort, County Sheriff’s Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, or the SC Department of Natural Resources.

The award was established in 1973 by retired Marine Colonel Jesse Altman who was the Beaufort Chief of Police for 18 years.
This year the award went to Officer Michael Brock of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who on January 31, 2016 foiled the robbery of two women by two armed suspects. Other outstanding nominees were Corporal Jacob Scott and Lance Corporal Dustin Kline of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Officer Brandon Zuraw from the Beaufort Police Department and Senior Trooper Laura Maule of the S.C. State Highway Patrol.
