LiteracyLiteracy Information for 2006-2007 What are the components of President-elect Bill Boyd’s literacy wish list for 2006-07? Answers
What are the months in which clubs should feel obligated to conduct a visible literacy activity? Answer The months of March and September. (The 2004 Council of Legislation changed the month to emphasize Literacy from July to March. Some clubs were aware of the change and some were not. The publication, “ABCs of Rotary;” still list Literacy month listed as July)
( March 1st is World Book Day; March 2nd is Dr. Seuss day in the U.S.)
(Clubs can hold their activity any day of the week of Sept. 8th)
What is the most popular literacy project? Answer The Dictionary Project ** Even though Literacy Emphasis is in March, clubs involved in distribution of dictionaries to schools should not wait until March. Teachers are excited as third graders dictionaries are delivered. Conduct your dictionary project as soon after school begins in the fall as possible.
Have you used your District Assembly Literacy Packet to plan club Literacy activities? District 7770 Club Literacy Chairs should be using the Literacy Certification Form and other suggestion in the packet as a planning tool. Materials from the packet can be downloaded from the District web site. ** Dictionary Project -Since 1999 Rotarians in District 7770 have participated in The Dictionary Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit foundation which was the brainchild of Mrs. Mary French of Charleston. Its goal is to assist students to become good writers, active readers, and creative thinkers by providing third graders with their own personal dictionaries. The project is now national in scope, with more than 1.2 million dictionaries donated and distributed by Rotarians and other volunteers throughout the country in 2004-05. Clubs may order dictionaries through Mrs. French at a discounted price by e-mailing her at Wordpower2@aol.com, or from any other publisher or source you prefer. Dictionaries can be given to all third graders in public, private, and parochial schools. For further information or to report your club’s participation, contact District 7770 Dictionary Project Chairperson Hazel Smith at hazcsmith@hargrary.com
