In a recent meeting Past District Governor from District 7790 Dr. Deborah Walters presented a program to the club on Safe Passage, a Maine registered non-profit that assists the children of the families who live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community.

Deb is combining her passion for the children and families at Safe Passage with her passion for long distance paddling by kayaking from her home in Maine to Guatemala.  Deb started in July 2014.  She is paddling alone over 2,500 miles over the course of a year. Along the route Deb will be stopping and sharing the stories of the grit and perseverance of the children and families living in the Guatemala City garbage dump community.

President Nat and Marsha Kaminski were gracious enough to host Deb at their home for several nights.

Ps: Deb suffered a back injury and has been seeing specialist in Georgetown and Charleston. The Kaminski’s have provided housing and transportation to Deb throughout, and now her husband has traveled down from Maine and is also staying with them. That demonstrates the strength of the Rotary Family.
