Polio in Afghanistan:
No new WPV case was reported.
All four WPV cases this year were reported from Eastern Region. The most recent WPV1 case had onset of paralysis on 23 July, from Kunar province.
No WPV3 has been detected in Afghanistan since April 2010.
No new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) cases were reported. The total number of cVDPV2 cases in 2013 remains three. The most recent cVDPV2 case had onset of paralysis on 13 March (from Kandahar, Southern Region).
Subnational immunization days (SNIDs) were held on 1-3 July, with resources focusing on strengthening campaign quality in Southern and Eastern Regions. The next SNIDs are planned for 15-17 September.
Polio in Nigeria
One new WPV1 case was reported (from Taraba), bringing the total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 to 46. It is the most recent WPV case in the country and had onset of paralysis on 17 August.
No WPV3 has been detected in Nigeria since November 2012.
No new cVDPV2 cases were reported. The total number of cVDPV cases for 2013 remains one (with onset of paralysis on 6 June, from Borno).
Subnational Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) across northern states commenced on September 7th.
Polio this week in Pakistan
One new WPV1 case was reported (from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – KP), bringing the total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 to 28. It is the most recent WPV case in the country and had onset of paralysis on 19 August.
FATA remains the major poliovirus reservoir in Pakistan and in Asia, both due to WPV1 and cVDPV2. Efforts are ongoing to curb transmission in this area, including through vaccination at transit points and conducting Short Interval Additional Dose (SIADs) campaigns in areas that have recently become accessible.
No WPV3 has been detected in Pakistan since April 2012. The total number of cVDPV2 cases for 2013 remains 12.
