The North Charleston Rotary Club (#6255) had the opportunity to honor the former (and founding) Mayor of the City of North Charleston, John Bourne with the Service Above Self Award.
The Letter presented to Mayor Bourne Read:
Dear Mayor Bourne,
The Rotarian Service Above Self Award is recognized by Rotary International and on a local level by Rotary clubs as one of the highest awards bestowed upon an individual.
The award is seated in Rotary’s official motto, “Service Above Self,” and traces back to the early days of the organization. It was adapted from a speech Ben Collins made in 1911 when he declared that the proper way to organize a Rotary club is to live by the principle “Service, Not Self.”
Your public and private life has centered on that principle. Your dedicated service to the people of North Charleston is legendary. As a former member of the Rotary Club of North Charleston, you always served its members and the goals of Rotary with enthusiasm and great sincerity.
On behalf of the Rotary Club of North Charleston, it is an honor and privilege to present you today with the prestigious Rotary Club of North Charleston Service Above Self Award.
