It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially around the Rotary Club of Daniel Island. This year the Rotary Club supported the efforts of three local charities as they worked to provide a happy holiday to those in need.
The Charleston Port and Seafarers Society welcomes and serves the needs of men and women who make their living on the sea and whose ships stop in the port of Charleston. Each year the Society sponsors a Christmas at Sea program and this is the fourth year that Daniel Island Rotary has participated. This year we “adopted” 2 ships that will call at the Wando Port during the holidays. Rotarians filled 50 individual boxes with requested toiletry items, along with candy and a holiday greeting. We know that 50 sailors will have a happier Christmas when they open their boxes and find all kinds of needed items!
East Cooper Meals on Wheels is known for their home delivery of good nutritious meals to seniors. At Christmas, they like to provide a little something extra for their meal recipients. This year, Meals on Wheels requested warm hats, gloves and scarves as a special present and the Rotary Club purchased enough sets for over 40 local seniors to stay a little warmer in winter weather.
Goodwill is known for its provision of job training and employment services. Their Golden Angel Tree program provides additional clothing and food for local seniors in need. Daniel Island Rotarians donated jigsaw puzzles to add some Christmas cheer to the packages the seniors will receive. In addition, Rotarian volunteers helped wrap small gifts for one of the local senior centers.
