The Rotary Club of Hilton Head took a new direction on their Safety Town program for 2017. Instead of setting a date and opening it to the public, this year we partnered with the Hilton Head Early Childhood Center and created a morning fieldtrip for their 140 PreK children. Students and teachers arrived by bus and visited 12 safety stations where they participated in activities that provided valuable safety lessons. Besides “Safety Town,” a child-sized town allowing children the opportunity to “drive” on the roads around town and learn about road signs, traffic lights and cross walks, the children learned about fire safety from the Hilton Head Fire and Rescue, as well as how 911 works and when to call. The children met with Beaufort County Sherriff to learn stranger danger and see the inside of their patrol car. Students experienced electricity safety with Palmetto Electric and how to approach a strange animal with Sasha the Comfort Dog. Hilton Head Hospital provided Teddy Bear Triage, teaching some basic first aid and helping children know that doctors and nurses are their friends. Each child received a t-shirt and goodie bag to help them remember their time at Safety Town. If only one child is saved or safes a life because of the lessons they learned, it is worth all the effort! The Rotary Club of Hilton Head has everything needed to offer Safety Town in your local community and is happy to share the lessons we’ve learned and materials we’ve developed. Our club has purchased a trailer that is available to other Rotary clubs if they would like to host their own event. For more information, please contact the Hilton Head Rotary Club.
