|The St. Andrews Rotary Club members listened attentively to the Job Coaches of Lexington-Richland District 5’s TOOLS Program at its weekly meeting on Tuesday. Job Coaches Kathy Gray, Beth Stone and Sara Patton informed the gathered Rotarians that TOOLS stands for Tranitional Opportunities for Optional Lifetime Success.
TOOLS is an educational program for special education, non-diploma high schools students in Lexington-Richland District 5. The purpose of TOOLS is to assist students in making a smooth transition from the school environment to the community. St. Andrews Rotary has a long-standing history of support of the program, annually recognizing an outstanding student participant.
The goal of TOOLS is to ensure students develop skills appropriate for their ability level and interest to promote lifetime success. The Job Coaches help students achieve this goal by focusing on functional academics such as lifeskills math, personal management, career exploration and teaching students job skills. The Job Coaches gave St. Andrews Rotary an update on several past students who have used the skills they learned through TOOLS to lead successful lives. Each story told demonstrates not only the achievements of those individuals but the impact the TOOLS program has upon our community.
