The Chapin Rotary Club completed its 2014 distribution of dictionaries to elementary students with a visit to the 3rd graders at Little Mountain Elementary School. Dictionaries had previously been distributed to students at Lake Murray and Chapin elementary schools.

In addition to the students pictured at Little Mountain are Rotarians (L-R) Dr.Akil Ross, Ron Saxton, Dr.Mack Branham, John Stickney, Tom Wilkinson, and Margaret Hinson.

Dr. Joseph C. Von Nessen, noted  USC economics professor, joined the Chapin Rotary for breakfast and discussed the current positive and negative economic trends in South Carolina. Our state currently leads all other states in leading indicators of positive growth. Dr. Von Nessen  cautioned club members to be aware of the impact of cultural and political bias when analyzing economic reports.

The Chapin Rotary Club participated in the annual Community Service Day by preparing and delivering meals to older adults
who are homebound and not able to prepare their meals. The club also delivers these meals on a quarterly basis Pictured from l-r are Rotarians John Stickney, John and Mary LaFond,

Chapin Sistercare

Sistercare board member Dwight Galloway joined the Chapin Rotary for breakfast and spoke about their program of services offered for battered women and their children.Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status,race, religion, nationality, or educational background. He received a donation from Rotary president Lisa Smith on behalf of the Chapin club.

Mr. Shealy was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow, representing a financial contribution in his honor to the Rotary Foundation. chapin rotary 1Dan Rogers, Project Manager for the past 26 years with the SC Film Commission, spoke to the Chapin Rotary Club regarding the exciting past and present movie and television projects in South Carolina. Rogers identified the numerous benefits of securing these projects, including job creation and large cash infusions to local communities.The film industry is second only to the aerospace industry as America’s  largest export industry.

Dr FulmerDr.Karl Fulmer, Chief Financial Officer of the  Lexington-Richland Five School District, spoke to the Chapin Rotary Club and assured  members that the District was in good shape, both academically and financially. Dr.Fulmer, an educator for 47 years, confirmed that he was stepping down this January, after coming out of retirement in 2009 to assist schools in the Irmo, Chapin, Dutch Fork, Harbinson and St. Andrews after a lengthy career in the Lexington One School District. he will be succeeded by Len Richardson, finance director at the State Department of Education for the past 13 years.

LeeBernadette Lee, a licensed practical nurse, spoke to the Chapin Rotary Club about the risks of Atherosclerois, or hardening of the arteries, which is the primary cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in America, with more than 800,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2010.
She  encouraged members to take advantage of several  screening test available locally that can provide early detection of the disease. Ms. Lee is a  member  of the Rotary Club and major accounts executive with Advanced Diagnostics, Inc. She can be reached on (803) 419-4235 for more information.

After 3 long years of fundraising and 3 LONG days of building it feels good to have the Rotary playground in Chapin finished. With that said, what a great weekend. I want to thank everyone who contributed no matter how big or small. The attendance at today’s opening ceremony was truly amazing.

rotary ambassadorial scholarEmily Dawes, a 2010 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar  spoke to the Chapin Rotary Club about her exciting experiences as a Rotary Exchange Student at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, where she received an MA in history. Prior to her Rotary Scholarship,Ms.Dawes had recently graduated from Purdue University and was a post graduate student enrolled at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. Following Beirut, she returned to the prestigious Moroccan University where she completed her second MA in International Studies and Diplomacy.
She was sponsored by the Lafayette Rotary Club in District 6560. Her host club was the Beirut Cosmopolitan Rotary Club and she was a member of their Rotoract Club.
She is currently an Adjunct Facility Member in the Midlands Tech Political Science Department and an ESL instructor at the Hammond School in Columbia.
Also pictured, reluctantly, is PAG George McConnell, who with wife Karen also spent time working and traveling in the Middle East, including beautiful Lebanon, sometime after the Crusades.
