Rotary Club of Mt Pleasant Holds Rotary Day

mt pleasant rotary dayWhat is a Rotary Day? “RI President Gary C.K. Huang urged all Rotary members to “Light Up Rotary” by organizing a Rotary Day in 2014-15. The concept is simple: hold a fun, informal event in your community to introduce the public to your club and Rotary. You’ll not only improve Rotary’s image in your community, you’ll also boost interest in joining your club.” It is a great way to show the community the ways that Rotary lives the motto, “Service Above Self”. Our club recently held a Rotary Day event and received positive feedback from community members that we saw and met.  Eleven members participated throughout the event and enjoyed spending time together and meeting others in the community.  The event was organized by Mike Thurman and Hill Durant.

mt pleasant paul harris fellowSupporting the  Rotary Foundation is important to The Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant.  We want to be a part of Rotary’s mission to “advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.”  The Foundation not only supports these goals globally, but locally as well with the awarding of grants for worthy projects here in our area.  Our club has a strong tradition of giving to the Foundation.   In the past couple of months, we have  had the pleasure of  awarding 16 Paul Harris Fellow awards which have been previously reported in the District  newsletters.  Our latest recipient, Mary Lindsay, was awarded her second Paul Harris award by Past District Governor and District Foundation Chair Lou Mello.  Congratulations to Mary!

Oct 212014

Saturday, October 11th, the Rotary Club of Mt Pleasant partnered with the East Cooper Breakfast Club to provide free shoes to deserving school students in the East Cooper area. Working together, the  guidance counselors and principals at 12 schools provided the list of students and gave each a letter of invitation to the event. The Mount Pleasant Target Store provided the venue and children were given the opportunity to select and receive a new pair of shoes and socks.

This year’s event provided free shoes and socks to 235 happy students. The event also offered an opportunity for the Wando High School Interact Club as well as the Rotaract Club from the College of Charleston to participate as escort and shoe shopping assistants. Thirty-five volunteers from the two Rotary clubs were joined by twelve Interact and Rotaract students in a day that was rewarding, full of fellowship, as well as a lot of fun.

As part of our commitment to Polio Plus and support of October as Polio Plus month, Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant has taken part in a couple of fund raising activities.  Several of our members accepted an Ice Bucket Challenge in support of polio plus and our membership enjoyed the videos of fellow members getting doused.  In addition, Polio Plus Chairperson Beth Sherr organized a “This Close” event in which members donated money to Polio Plus in return for getting their “This Close” picture made.
