At the Aug. 2nd meeting of the Daniel Island Rotary Club, the beneficiaries that were chosen by the club to receive proceeds raised from the 2017 Duck Race, received their checks from Club President Todd Musheff, 2017 Duck Race Chairman George Jucha, and Barbara McLaughlin from the DI Community Fund. It was a wonderful way to close out the Duck Race season in what was another successful event that, with the help of the Daniel Island Community Fund, raised over $69,000 going to these beneficiaries.  We’d like to thank everybody once again who helped make the race possible, especially all the businesses and individuals that adopted the some 23,000+ ducks.

At the July 26th meeting of the Daniel Island Rotary Club, Hank Hofford and Teddy Turner from Spirit of South Carolina, Inc, shared their inspiring story in their quest to help students develop leadership and enhance education, connect to the world, and reconnect with South Carolina’s history. From left to right, Spirit of SC’s Teddy Turner, Club President Todd Musheff, and Hank Hofford, also of Spirit of SC.

Spirit of SC, a 140-ft. two-masted topsail schooner, honors Charleston’s once booming, but largely forgotten shipbuilding industry. The frames, planks and interior finish were shaped from reclaimed, South Carolina Live Oak, Cypress and Long Leaf Yellow Pine. Extensive varnish work showcases the raw beauty of these native woods and the fine craftsmanship joining it all together.

The educational mission of Spirit is offering unique opportunities for students focusing on history, math, science and literature of South Carolina’s water resources and encouraging personal responsibility, contribution to community and stewardship of environment. The Rotary Club of Daniel Island was excited to welcome Mr. Hofford and Mr. Turner to tell Spirit’s story and we look forward to supporting their very worthwhile mission!
