The Rotary Club of Beaufort, Beaufort’s oldest Rotary, hosted Retired Army Major General William F. Grimsley, the state of South Carolina’s first Secretary of Veterans Affairs at its Wednesday, September 23d luncheon meeting.  Secretary Grimsley, from Beaufort, assumed this position in March 2020.  General Grimsley framed his remarks around his department’s mission statement:  “…serving veterans and their families.  They are our customers and customer service is our first and most important job.” Since assuming his position in March, he has focused on establishing and leading a state-wide coalition of partners to ensure a common goal of taking care of South Carolina’s service members, former service members, and their families.  There are an estimated 405,000 veterans residing in South Carolina, and approximately 23,000 veterans in Beaufort County.  The Rotary Club of Beaufort conducts “hybrid” meetings, with approximately half of its membership attending a luncheon meeting while the other half participates virtually via Zoom.
