The Greater Charleston Rotary Auxiliary ( formerly known as “The RotaryAnns”) began in January of 1923. The Charleston (all male) Rotary was sponsoring the Rotary District Conference that year, and the Rotary wives were asked to help with the planning and execution of the activities. Over 700 Rotarians from SC, NC and VA were expected to be in attendance at the event.
Mrs. A Chambliss Connelley spearheaded the group of 27 wives which successfully arranged for accommodations, entertainment and other necessary activities. The ladies met regularly to plan the event. After it was over, they decided to continue to meet monthly and formed the
The Auxiliary still meets monthly and has grown to over 70 members! The group functions much like a Rotary Club. Its mission is also “Service Above Self,” and the ladies are dedicated to helping others through various charity projects during the year.
