Myrtle Beach Rotarians recently heard from Bishop Gary Rivas, a South African who felt a calling into ministry and led youth and young adult ministries in the church where he grew up. An ordained minister, he was elected a Bishop in 2015 and now serves the First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach as Director of Evangelism.  Gary shared with Rotarians thoughts of his home country and their customs, along with a glimpse into his life in South Africa.

Gary holds a Master’s Degree in Theology from the University of Pretoria and is currently pursuing doctoral studies through the Wesley House at Cambridge University. He serves on the boards of Alpha South Africa and the Willow Creek Association South Africa.

Gary is a biking, motor-biking, and golf enthusiast. He can best be described as a bold and dynamic speaker and preacher, a visionary leader, and a truly dedicated servant of God.
