Frances Marion University President Luther F. Carter, PhD was our guest speaker this week. He gave us an update on the school and its plans. Francis Marion University continues to grow to meet the educational needs of the Pee Dee Region. Recent projects have expanded the academic and athletic facilities on campus, as well as in downtown Florence, where a new Medical Arts building is under construction. The reach of the university has also expanded beyond the Pee Dee Region, with new programs being developed in Mt. Pleasant and in North Charleston. Dr. Carter states that the College of Charleston is now a willing and encouraging partner for new degrees in the Charleston area such as Industrial Engineering to meet the technological requirements of the region.
Since 1999, Dr. Luther Fredrick Carter has served as the president of Francis Marion University. Previously, he served as the Chief of Staff to Governor Mark Sanford, the executive director of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board, the senior executive assistant to South Carolina Governor Carroll Campbell, the chairman of the political science department at the College of Charleston. He is the recipient of the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, and honorary degrees from the College of Charleston, Lander University and the Citadel.
