The Rotary Club of Beaufort began its youth exchange program in 1988. Fifteen-year old Acacia Bamberg, then a student at Beaufort High School, was selected as the club’s first exchange student, and she began a year’s study in Brazil. In the 32 years since Acacia’s year abroad, the club has
sent or hosted 63 students for an average of about two students each year.
After her year in Brazil, where she became completely fluent in Portuguese, Acacia attended and graduated from Columbia College, then continued her education at Emory University, where she received a master of divinity degree.

Today, Acacia is a leading voice on issues of health equity, public health engagement, and community stakeholder outreach, and she serves as the Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, representing the 5th District of Connecticut. Prior to that, she worked on the staff of South
Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, and she also worked in President Obama’s administration, in the Department of Health and Human Services, working on the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Acacia addressed the Beaufort Rotarians, in part to thank them for what she described as the turning point in her life, and the reason why she has dedicated herself to a career in public service.
