COVID-19 antibody testing included with blood donation

Spring Valley Rotary Club has scheduled a Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, January 26 from Noon to 6 p.m. at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church located at 125 Sparkleberry Lane in Northeast Columbia. “If you’re healthy and well, we’re urging you to make a donation appointment,” said Rotary Club President Belinda Portnall. She added, “As Coronavirus concerns continue, we need healthy blood donors more than ever.”

The American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. As part of that effort, plasma from whole blood donations that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Please note the Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, including COVID-19. If you feel unwell for any reason, please postpone your donation. Individuals who believe they may be ill with COVID-19 should not present to donate until they are symptom free for 28 days and feeling well and healthy.

Donors need to be a minimum of 17 years of age and in general good health. Individuals who are 16 years of age can donate if accompanied by a parent. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger have to also meet certain height and weight requirements. All social distancing protocols will be in place and all donors are required to wear a mask. The Red Cross has taken extra steps to ensure that blood drive locations are safe for all donors and Red Cross personnel. To make an appointment, call Diane Junis at (803) 873-0254 or sign up online at www.redcrossblood.org. (Type in the sponsor code of SV Rotary and follow the directions.) Appointments are strongly encouraged and walk-ins may need to wait. For questions regarding donor eligibility, call the Red Cross at (803) 251-6000.
