Our Sunset Rotary of Hilton Head Island 2020 – ’21 President Elect, Toney Mathews opened our meeting on March 9th with the following praryer.
INTRODUCTION BEFORE THE PRAYER:
- This month is celebrated as National Women’s Month and an International Women’s Day.
- The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920 and gave women the right to vote.
- The Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the Senate and sent to the States for ratification in 1972. It lacked 3 of the necessary 3/4 of States (38) ratifying it by the deadline of the end of 1981. It was dormant for many years, but in January 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment. The validity of that action was well after the deadline and may only be symbolic.
- Rotary allowed women to become Rotarians in 1989.
LET US PRAY:
Dear Lord, this month to honor women and in recognition of International Women’s Day we give thanks for the many contributions of women to Rotary since they were allowed to be members in 1989. Their contributions have been invaluable: 2 presidents (soon to be 3) in this club and the first woman to be a Rotary International vice-president, Anne Matthews (2013 – 2014), from our own District 7770.
We pause to remember the Sunset Rotary Club’s fourth president, John Day, who recently passed away. Comfort those who grieve, especially his wife Gwen. We rejoice in assurance of the resurrection.
Bless our visitors and all members here tonight. May our tradition of Service Above Self continue and our bonds of friendship be forever strengthened. AMEN
