Hilton Head Island, SC. . . Thanks to a partnership of the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club and Belk Department Store, two hundred Hilton Head elementary school children were outfitted with shoes and warm jackets on Saturday, November 15, 2014. The “Happy Feet” event was organized to distribute shoes to children of needy families as identified by school counselors and social workers. For the second year, Hilton Head Belk management made a special effort to stock and donate the shoes while a $3000 contribution of the HHI Rotary Club and matching grant from Rotary District 7770 enabled the purchase of warm jackets for all the children as well.
More than two dozen Rotarians, aided by school principals, teachers and store personnel, helped students register, have a snack, and fit shoes and jackets. The children even had a visit from Santa. According to event chair Rose Jackson-Knighton, “The event was a great succcess as documented by the smiles and thank you’s of the participating children and parents.”
