The program speaker at the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo meeting for March 6, 2013 was Dr. Tripp Jones. Dr. Jones is a member of the club and he talked about Honor Flight of South Carolina, which was begun in July 2008 by Bill Dukes and friends. The original goal of Honor Flight of SC was to provide an opportunity for every WWII veteran in South Carolina a chance to visit his or her memorial. This opportunity has recently been expanded to include Korean War veterans. Each flight costs about $60,000 and is funded through donations. There is no cost to the veteran for the trip. Each trip begins around 6 am with a flight from Columbia to Washington, DC. While in Washington the group tours the WWII, Lincoln, Korean War, Vietnam and the Iwo Jima Memorials. Depending on weather and time the group may also visit the Air Force Memorial and the Naval Museum before returning to Columbia around 8 pm. It is a very long day, but a wonderful experience for all those involved. The next flights scheduled will be April 17 and May 22 of this year.
