In an effort to address the issue of hungry families, former Rotary International Vice President, Anne Matthews, started a program called “Rotary Has HEART” challenging Rotarians to use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to engage their communities and help feed the hungry, especially the children. Statistics show that 28% of children in South Carolina face hunger and food anxiety issues on a daily basis.  The goal of the Cayce-West Columbia Rotary was to “Fill the Bin” with unperishable food items (which they did) for the Food Pantry at the Brookland Baptist Church (where the club meets each Tuesday). The club also made a financial donation to the Food Pantry at Christian Life Assembly; these two diverse locations, (approved Harvest Hope food banks), supply food to those in need in surrounding areas and beyond. NO child should ever have an empty belly and suffer from hunger in our communities. We are our brother’s keeper.  Rotary has Heart!

The Cayce-West Columbia Rotary had reason to celebrate at its July 24th

the initial visit the by the District Governor Dr. Jimmie Williamson who has an impressive and

diverse background. Jimmie has been a Rotarian since 1996 having served as President of the

Cheraw club, President-Elect of the Kingstree club, Assistant District Governor for 3 years, and

member of the nominating committee and the finance committee. He has an undergraduate

and master’s degree from Winthrop University, a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina

and is an author of Roadways To Success, a text book for underprepared college students.

Jimmie spent 28 years in higher education as President of 2 technical colleges, left for a 6 year

period in the business/healthcare world working at Agape Senior and currently works as the

System President/CEO of the South Carolina Technical College System. He became District

Governor this year for Area 7770.

Secondly, during his visit, Dr. Williamson inducted the first new member of the year to the

Cayce-West Columbia Rotary: Ms. Stephanie Jordan. Stephanie is the West Columbia Branch

(Cayce) Chappelle Broome, Columbia Metropolitan Airport’s Director of Human Resources and DBE

Liaison has officially been inducted as President of the Cayce-West Columbia Rotary Club. Broome, a

recent graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute, will serve a one-year term as Chapter President.

During her term, she hopes to generate a renewed interest in Rotary’s mission and expand on the

chapter’s already active engagement in the community. “We’ve been looking for ways to introduce

rotary to our community’s next generation of leaders for a while now and I’m excited to have this

chance to lead the charge on that. I’ll be the face of our chapter for the next year and my goal is to bring

a new energy and fresh perspective on what rotary is and what it means to be a Rotarian. You do not

join rotary and become a member, you join rotary and become a Rotarian and that is what sets rotary

apart in the community and the world.” says Broome. Among the Cayce-West Columbia chapter’s

signature events are an annual Breakfast with Santa and the Cayce-West Columbia Rotary River Run.

The Cayce-West Columbia Rotary Club meets Tuesday afternoons at the Brookland Banquet Center.
