The Rotary Club of Mt. Pleasant has always been a very active club and the last few months have been no exception. With the help of District Governor and Club member Lou Mello, our Club is sponsoring a new Rotaract Club at The College of Charleston, which boasts 27 charter members!
And the Interact Club at Wando High School has also been busy as those members have participated in many of our community service projects.
On 9/28, 10/7 and 12/7 we joined with Habitat for Humanity in the construction of a new home for a family in the Mt. Pleasant area.
On October 5th , Christmas came early as we partnered with Target and gave 232 pairs of new shoes to students in need through our Happy Feet project. Everyone loves a new pair a shoes, but these children are especially grateful!
In November we continued our Dictionary Project, spearheaded by Jody Bishop, when our members delivered new dictionaries to every 3rd grader in the East Cooper area. They love having their own books and our members derive so much pleasure from interacting with these precious children, educating them on Rotary and showing them how to use their dictionaries. And the thank you notes we get from them make this project a special treat for us all.
Our signature project, Backpack Buddies, continues in full swing. Each month our members gather at the office of Sam Herrin to pack food that is delivered to 125 students every Friday. A total of 4750 bags have been packed this year. Without this backpack of food, many of these children would not have anything to eat over the weekends. And this week, many of our members will travel to Wando High School to help judge the Senior Projects that the students of the Senior Class have been working on all year. If you ever have concern over the intelligence, capability, and generosity of the next generation, spend a day at Wando and your faith in the future of our country will be quickly restored!
Happy Holidays to all!
