The Rotary Club of Orangeburg-Morning, utilizing a District Grant, purchased and delivered 944 dictionaries to 3rd graders in 14 different local schools in Orangeburg County. The club has been delivering dictionaries since 1996 and estimates is has handed out well over 16,000 dictionaries since that time. Two person teams of Rotarians visit the schools to share what Rotary is about and then pass out the dictionaries and have the students look up the Orangeburg County Character trait of the Month. This year, the character trait “Safety” was looked up in the dictionary and one of the students read the definition and then a discussion took place about how the students can practice “Safety”. Orangeburg-Morning President Debbie Hare indicated dictionary project was one many Rotarians enjoy. “The dictionary project is one of my favorite Rotary projects each year. It is a real pleasure seeing the children’s faces light up as we pass out the dictionaries and help them learn to look up words. Their excitement and appreciation is very heart warming.” Rotarian Sallie Bachman, who oversaw the service project echoed President Debbie’s remarks “‘Although there have been many advances in technology that allow students to access tablets and computers, nothing compares to the personal connection that an actual book can elicit. Dictionaries help open a child’s mind, expand his/her reach and access to words, and challenge vocabulary development and comprehension. Taking ownership of a dictionary by inviting a child to write his/her name on the inside cover is a simple but meaningful experience for both students and Rotarians who participate in the 3rd Grade Dictionary Delivery project.” One of the schools in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 is Dover Elementary in North, SC. Matt Schilit, Principal at Dover, verbalized his appreciation to Rotary for this worthwhile project., “As we strive to meet the needs of all students, we are constantly looking for resources that support learning. Thanks to the generous donation from our Rotary our students at Dover Elementary now have dictionaries that will support and enhance their learning. These dictionaries will be used in a variety of ways as teach our students on a daily basis.
