columbia capitalIn November 2013, parts of the Philippines were devastated by one of the strongest typhoons on record. Thousands lost their lives, more than 30,000 were injured, and millions displaced or affected.

In the spirit of their motto, “Service Above Self”, the Columbia Capital Rotary Club members internally raised $2,425 that funded two shelter boxes tremendously helping people in need in the Philippines. Each durable shelter box was shipped and contained essential resources such as:
  • A tent, blankets, insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets,
  • Water purification kits,
  • Cooking supplies such as pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers,
  • A basic tool kit containing a hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters,
  • A children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and other supplies.

shelter box3At a weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island in November, one of the Club’s members, Marc Stuckart, informed the Club membership that the Board had agreed to purchase one ShelterBox.  This was followed by Marc challenging the Club membership to a match.  He stated to those in attendance that he personally would match any contributions made towards the purchase of an additional ShelterBox up to $1,000.

And then an amazing thing happened!

The Club members began to commit to donations that started at $50 then went quickly to $100 to as much as $200 per member.  After only 5 minutes the Club membership had committed to purchase an additional 5 ShelterBoxes or approximately $5,000 for a total of 6 ShelterBoxes to be sent to aid those in the Philippines.  The Club was doing good in the world for those that they do not know and would probably never meet but understood that there are others in need.  This is truly Rotary In Motion!
