On December 21st the Rotary Club of Daniel Island completed its second holiday food drive delivering 165 Christmas meals and turkeys to the Cainhoy Community Center and 56 to Seven Farms Apartments on Daniel Island. The meals at Cainhoy are then delivered to families and individuals in the area most in need this holiday season. At our December 6th meeting, we were honored to have Stephanie M. Kelley, Executive Director at East Cooper Community Outreach, or ECCO as many people know it by, speak to our club. Stephanie gave a very informative presentation about the organization, giving everyone a reminder that not only do they act as a food bank and a place for basic needs (clothing, household furnishings, etc.), for those in need, but also a place for individuals to receive assistance with financial aid, dental/medical care, prescriptions, counseling, and educational opportunities just to name a few. The Rotary Club of Daniel Island is very proud to have a mutual partnership with ECCO, working with them on various projects as well as them being a beneficiary from our Duck Race in years past.

The Daniel Island club participated in one of it’s annual food drives on November 21st, delivering some 165 meals/turkeys to the Cainhoy Community Center for the Thanksgiving holiday. About 18 Rotatians volunteered for the event and a special thanks goes out to Club member Cecil Mills for helping organize it all. Thank you Cecil! We’d also like to thank Publix for putting together the meals and boxing up the turkeys. We couldn’t have done it without them!
At the club social on Tuesday, September 26th, the club recognized Chris Hargrove with the “Service Above Self” Award. Ms. Hargrove risked her own life when she ran into a neighbors burning home to save her dog. Ms. Hargrove’s neighbor was away on business and she knew that the dog was home alone. Although in her late 80’s, she never thought twice about the risk to her own life. The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo was honored to present as a token of our appreciation to Ms. Hargrove a plaque and a gift card to Firehouse Subs, she certainly exemplifies our motto “service above self”.
Our speaker Wednesday, September 20th was Ms. Catherine Kennedy from Columbia Green. Columbia Green is a non-profit in the Midlands that does exactly what its name implies. They make Columbia Green by planting flowers, giving out grants for tree planting, giving out grants for neighborhood planting, etc. Ms. Kennedy currently serves on Columbia Green’s board as the President. She spoke to us Wednesday morning about all the wonderful things this organization is doing and how they are raising money to continue to do these amazing things. We were honored to have Ms. Kennedy speak to us.
