This Friday we had the Honor of having Ms. Kim Richardson, President and Founder of Widows of opportunity, to share with our Members about her support organization for widows and widowers.   Ms Richardson is dedicated to help, support, and educate widows no matter their age, race, length of being a widow, or circumstances surrounding spousal death.

Ms, Richardson started with 4 widows and now  with thousands in area to include, SC, Georgia, NC, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Iowa and internationally  – Africa, Australia, and the United Kingdom.  There are over 300 Million Widows Worldwide and over 13 Million Widows in the U.S.

There are support groups, educational opportunities, one on one meetings, emergency financial assistance and connecting widows with resources to assist with life circumstances .

Windows of Opportunity is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization based in Columbia, SC.

We were honored to have Representative Rick Quinn , House District, SC House District 69 to speak with us on the legislation that he has proposed that would impact business license fees currently imposed by cities and some counties in SC.  This would help the small businesses start up funds.

Susan Thomas Executive Director of Glenforest School arranged for Dr. Oran P. Smith, Senior Fellow President and CEO of Palmetto Promise Institute., to speak at our Friday Morning Breakfast Meeting to describe the organization and its goals.

Promise Institute has been designed to educate and research fact sheets to help empower students and education options for South Carolina Families, information on Health Care and Energy, the study factors in potential environment impacts.  The Institute has created Fast Facts on ten ways to supercharge education in South Carolina, facts on Medicaid expansion and SC’s offshore opportunities.

Henry Taylor arranged for USC Football Coach Kirk Botkin. Coach Botkin had responsibility for coaching linebackers and Spurs for the U.S. C football team.

He shared with us on the upcoming program, the recruiting season and the outlook for the 2015 season. spring football a couple weeks away! One of the comments,  the Team is a Family.

Coach Botkin played professional football to include the New England Patriots.

Questions were exhilarating.   The Rotarians are ready for FOOTBALL!

This morning Reverend Kenneth Taylor invited Reverend Scooter Scott , Christ Central Ministries/Nehemiah Project,  to speak with us and update us on their activities.

Soon, they will launch a unique student -led soap business.

The goal through the ministry is to prepare students to become successful and significant adults while teaching them valuable life skilled called “work.  All the profits will be awarded to students in the form of scholarships upon their graduation from High School.

The pilot currently share God’s love with more than 1,000 families in Lexington County through 29 different ministeries.  They are a 501 (c) 3 organization.

Two of the students spoke about their project and their future.

west metroDuane Naquin had arranged for Honorable Else Partin, Mayor of the City of Cayce, to speak to the West Metro Rotary Club.

Mayor Partin updated the club on the current activities and growth of the City, the outlook of the 2015, and the on-going economic development news being generated in the City.

The power point was mapped out with the amazing  growth that has already happened and what a picture of things to come to rediscover Cayce, a new kind of city!

We were very excited to have Dr. Tom Siler, Superintendent-Elect of Lexington School District #2 speak to our Club on the execution of the recently passed school Bond referendum. Dr. Siler, will utilize the time in the interim over the 2014/15 school year to work in concert with the current Superintendent , build relationships, and plan a smooth transition in advance of Dr. Venus Holland’s current Superintendent departure.

Both Dr. Venus Holland and Dr Tom Siler are “Champions for Children”

The West Metro Rotary and Glenforest School cordially invites you to the 10th Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, November 15 at Glenforest School.  The event is from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The Chili-Cook-off event draws around 500 people annually.  In addition to the Chili Cook-off, this family friendly event will feature a Rotary Grill with grilled hamburgers, hotdogs and fries. A Kid’s Zone with children’s games and a jump house, a Car Show, and a silent auction.


We hope you will consider attending the school event to benefit the West Metro Rotary and Glenforest School.


Tickets are $15.00 …. When you arrive at the gate  you will receive 20 tickets to use for all the events and refreshments.

Lexington County Veterans Affairs Director Ed Lundeen gave an emotional account to the West Metro Rotary Club last week of his journey with World War II veteran Red Smith of Lexington and other veterans to Normandy for the 70th anniversary commemoration of the D-Day landing June 6, 1944. The U.S. National D-Day Memorial Foundation reports that  2,499 Americans and 1,914 from other Allied nations were killed, a total of 4,413 dead. To arrange for Lundeen to share this memorable experience with your civic, church, youth or veterans group, call him at 785-8400.
