When 6 year old James McDiffett, Jr. was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in 2014, his father, James McDiffett, Sr. placed a memorial bench, painted in patriotic colors and with the crest of the US Army’s 14th Infantry Regiment, adjacent to his son’s grave site. The bench was stolen several months ago, and when McDiffett’s former commanding officer found out, he contacted Representative Shannon Erickson, who in turn contacted Beaufort Rotarian Dr. Steve Lanier, a skilled furniture maker and wood worker. With assistance and support from other Rotarians, Dr. Lanier has crafted a replacement bench, complete with military memorabilia and an inscription from the Book of Isaiah, “And a child shall lead them.” That bench will be blessed and dedicated in a short ceremony to be attended by James McDiffett, Dr. Steven Lanier, Rev. Andrew Trapp, plus other Rotarians and active and retired military personnel.
